Vernal pool along the Highlands Trail in Newfoundland, New Jersey. Vernal pools dot the forest each spring and are used by over thrity species of reptiles and amphibians for feeding and breeding. The Wood Frog, Eastern Spade Foot Toad and seven species of salamander (Spotted, Eastern Tiger, Marbled, Jefferson and Blue Spotted) depend on these pools for breeding.
