Two hikers examine Tripod Rock, also known as
Three Pillar Rock in the Pyramid Mountain Natural Historical Area.
This is one of the more unusual glacial erratics found in the park.
It is named for the three rocks that this multi ton boulder is balanced
on. Glacial erratics are defined as large rocks or boulders carried
by a glacier away from their place of origin. Tripod Rock was deposited
by the Wisconsin Glacier over 18,000 years ago. Early civilizations
sometimes used glacial erratics as landmarks and meeting places. |
