Armillary sphere in the garden of Dey
Mansion in Wayne, New Jersey. The armillary sphere is an old astronomical
instrument It is composed of rings (known in Latin as armillae)
showing the positions of important circles of the celestial sphere.
The circles represent the horizon, the celestial equator, the
colures and the ecliptic. It models the celestial sphere with
respect to the horizon of an observer. These armillary spheres
were usually highly decorated. The sphere in the Dey Mansion Garden
uses an arrow to point north and a sailing ship to represent the
observers position.
